OCR Gallery ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our Android application ("OCR Gallery" or the "App").
By using OCR Gallery, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy.
OCR Gallery is designed with privacy as a core principle. We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal data to external servers. Specifically:
No cloud upload – All image processing (text recognition) happens entirely on your device using Google ML Kit. Your images never leave your phone.
No user accounts – You do not need to create an account or log in.
No location data – The app does not access your location.
No crash reporting – We do not automatically collect crash logs.
OCR Gallery requests the following permissions:
Permission
READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTED (Android 14+) / READ_MEDIA_IMAGES (Android 13+) / READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (older Android)
To access your images for text recognition and display in the gallery.
RECORD_AUDIO
Only if you tap the microphone icon in the search bar. Used solely for voice‑to‑text input. Audio is processed on‑device; no recording is stored or transmitted.
POST_NOTIFICATIONS (Android 13+)
To show optional scanning progress notifications only if you grant permission. Notifications show local scanning progress and can be turned off at any time in system settings.
AD_ID
To show personalized ads only after your consent. Personalized ads can be disabled from the settings. Ads will still be shown but they would be generic.
FOREGROUND_SERVICE / FOREGROUND_SERVICE_DATA_SYNC
To allow scanning of images even when you are not actively using an app. This is helpful where there are thousands of images to be scanned and you don't want to keep the app opened for the scan to get completed.
You may deny any permission. Denying storage permission prevents the app from functioning; denying audio or notifications only disables voice search or progress notifications (Background scanning), respectively.
OCR Gallery uses the following third‑party services:
4.1 Start.io (formerly StartApp) – Advertising
Purpose: To display banner and native ads within the app (unless you have purchased the "Remove Ads" or "Pro" IAP).
Data collected: Start.io may collect device identifiers (e.g., advertising ID), IP address, device type, OS version, and app usage for ad targeting.
Start.io Privacy Policy: https://www.start.io/policy/privacy-policy/
Your choices: You can purchase the "Remove Ads" IAP to disable all ads. You can also reset your advertising ID or opt out of personalized ads in the app Settings.
4.2 Umami – Anonymous Analytics
Purpose: To understand how users interact with the app (e.g., app opens, scans, settings changes) for improvement purposes.
Data collected: Umami does not collect or store any personal data. It anonymises all data collected, avoids the need for cookies, and is GDPR compliant out of the box.
Your choices: You may opt out of analytics at any time via Settings → "Share anonymous usage data". When opted out, no analytics events are sent.
4.3 RevenueCat – In‑App Purchases
Purpose: To process in‑app purchases (Pro Plan and Remove Ads).
Data collected: RevenueCat handles purchase validation and receipt management. We do not receive or store your payment details. RevenueCat may collect non‑personal transaction data (e.g., purchase confirmation, product identifiers) for the purpose of delivering your purchase.
Your choices: All purchases are processed through Google Play Services. You may request deletion of your transaction data by contacting us (see Section 10).
Images and their OCR results are stored locally in an SQLite database on your device.
Extracted text is never sent to our servers or any third party.
All OCR data (text extracted from images) remains on your device until you clear the app storage or uninstall the app.
When you uninstall OCR Gallery, all locally stored database entries are removed from your device. The original image files remain on your device (the app does not modify or delete them).
Analytics data retained by Umami is stored only in aggregate, anonymized form.
OCR Gallery is not intended for children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted within the app (e.g., in the Settings screen) and the "Last Updated" date will be revised. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
Because we do not collect personal data to external servers, your privacy rights are inherently protected. However, you have the right to:
Access / Delete – All your data is on your device. You can delete images or uninstall the app to remove OCR data.
Opt out of ads – Purchase the "Remove Ads" IAP or reset your advertising ID in device settings.
Opt out of analytics – Disable "Share anonymous usage data" in Settings.
For any privacy‑related questions, contact us (see Section 10).
